Short hike, amazing view !
Today, it’s the 4th day with sun in Norway. I’m definitely ready to go for an hike in the area. After a short look at the map, I have seen a small mountain which can probably offer me a nice view. 10 O’clock, the sun is out but the car is totally frozen ! You should always thing about the 10min more you will need to unfroze the car ! So the plan is to go to the Kjortåsen, and I have a map to arrive ! I’m very bad with the GPS so I decide to use the old reliable tool !
So first, I got lost by taking this road following the river. The car was announcing -6deg and there is snow on the road and everywhere around. The good thing with Norway is that you don’t care to get lost because it’s so beautiful ! You just continuer the road, admiring the landscape and hoping for a road on the left. Ok, when I arrived to this dead end street with a partially frozen lake in front of me, I decided to U turn…but this picture was totally worth it, wasn’t it ? ^^ (pink cross on the map)
So back to Jørpeland, I decide to follow the main road, the 13, until Solbakk and start to go up in a (very) small road with an amazing view (but no possibility to stop, you have to come with someone who drives !). For your information, a bus takes this road, so please the M space (meeting point) if you want to be able to cross it on the road. Then I turn left and I get lost (again). I was sitting in my car with my map when 2 hunters came to me(blue cross on the map). I asked them, in norwegian (so proud of me!) if they can help me to find the place and they explained me all the details in a perfect…english ! After that, of course, they asked me where I come from..none of them was able to speak french. One asked me if I was living here…and if I was married ! Haha..I answered “no” and his answer was “Unfortunately I am, too bad !”. Funny and nice norwegian people ! I love this country (oh, I already say that maybe ^^). I went back on the road and finally found easily the place to park the car with the sign of the trail.
Snow, ice and all alone !
It has snowed a lot last week so I havn’t really been able to see the trail. I have seen few red points but the trail was frozen water all the way. So I have decided to walk on the snow, beside. Did I already tell you how much I love my hiking shoes. It cost me a lot (230 euros) but if you want to hike, shoes have to be good. Specially when it’s wet or if you have to walk on the snow. I havn’t get my feet wet so didn’t get cold, it makes the hike much more enjoyable !
Just let’s speak about safety when you’re hiking alone and when there is snow and ice. First of all, always inform someone where you’re going. The snow can cover holes. So be careful where you put your foot. Try with a stick before for exemple. Even if you have good shoes, you will always slip on ice (except if you are wearing studs). So beware ! Stay focused on your hike, don’t watch your phone while hiking and always keep your 2 hands free of anything. Your camera can stay in your backpack. What is the best : to lose 1min to take it off your bag to take a shout or carrying it in your hand and crash it if you fall or worst, not been able to grab something to avoid you to fall down. For me, the choice is easy : security before all ! I use to consider mountain as the sea : 2 environments where you need to be prepared to stay safe.
As you can see on the pictures, the trail is going up pretty fast but it’s an easy walk and it needs me around 1hour to be on the top (including several stops for taking pictures). Follow the red spots 😉
360deg view, no noise, just me, the nature, and this amazing feeling to be free
I guess I need to learn new adjectives in english to express how beautiful the view is. If not, you’re going to think that’ I’m a bit repetitive. But you have a view at 360deg, in front of you, the fjord with Stavanger and on the other sides, mountains and forest. It’s really breath taking. As we agreed with a friend few weeks ago, to be amazed doesn”t cost anything. As usual, there is a column of stones at the top. This time, I had one, for my dad. He loved hiking in the mountains so much, he would have loved this country (if you forget the fact that he would have never taken the plane haha!)
Quite freezing over there, water, some snacks and it’s time to go down !
It takes me less than 1h to go up, about 30 min to go down. Easy hike, amazing view, totally worth to be done when the weather is nice and you have not a long time in front of you !
